The Command department is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the ship and its crew. Below are the various jobs that make up this department.
The Commanding Officer (CO) is the officer in command of a particular unit (starship, base, division). The CO has overall authority on how that unit is led and managed, and is usually given wide latitude to run the unit as they sees fit, within the bounds of Starfleet regulations, general orders, and protocols. The CO has a huge amount of responsibilities in representing Starfleet in a number of situations as well as reporting in their unit’s developments to their senior officer.
The First Officer, also refer to as the Executive Officer (XO), is the deputy commander of a particular unit. As the second-in-command, they are responsible for the management of day-to-day activities, including rosters, officer training and the general welfare of the crew. Thus their role helps in freeing the CO to concentrate on planning and execution of their mission orders. The XO also takes charge in the absence of the CO. The First Officer is also responsible for one of the three major departments (i.e.: science, engineering or armoury).
The Second Officer (2XO) is third in command of a particular unit. They are responsible in supporting the First Officer with their command duties. In the absence of the CO or XO, the Second Officer will assume their duties until their return to active duty. The Second Officer is also responsible for one of the three major departments (i.e.: science, engineering or armoury).
The Third Officer (3XO) is fourth in command of a particular unit. In the absence of the CO, XO, or 2XO the Third Officer will assume their duties until their return to active duty. The Third Officer is also responsible for one of the three major departments (i.e.: science, engineering or armoury).
Chief of the Boat
The Chief of the Boat (COB), sometimes referred as the Command Master Chief (CMC), is the highest ranking enlisted officer serving within a unit. Along with their own duties within a department they are responsible in serving the command staff as an advisor for all enlisted affairs on board a starship.
The Yeoman is the clerical assistant to the Commanding Officer and is also known as the Administrative Manager. The Yeoman is the sole person that provides administrative support to within the unit. In addition to performing general administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, correspondence, scheduling appointments and meetings, and fielding queries, the yeoman is typically responsible for implementing and managing all administrative systems with the consent of the command staff.
This type of management includes such responsibilities as procuring and managing office supplies (in conjunction with the Quartermaster), implementing the business or organization’s filing and documentation retrieval systems and managing the calendar and schedule of the Commanding Officer.
